ESG Goals for SMEs Start With Energy Data
Smaller firms aren’t required to report on sustainability yet, but customers and contract bids can still ask for the numbers. Here’s why reliable energy data is the first step.
No UK law yet requires smaller firms to publish a sustainability report, but customers can already ask for the numbers behind ESG goals. Those numbers start with energy data.
ESG goals are hard to back up without energy data you can trust, and many smaller organisations only have a monthly bill. Aireavu fits sensors to a building and splits energy use out by system, with real-time reporting that shows when it's used. Its overviews describe measurable, reportable sustainability savings that organisations can use to report against Net Zero and wider sustainability commitments.
Aireavu's public write-up of its work with Portakabin shows the results. In occupied Portakabin buildings, Aireavu's AI cut user-driven energy waste by up to 87%, with comfort maintained or improved. An independent evaluation by d-fine found the AI system transparent, reliable and trustworthy.
The law hasn't caught up. Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting covers quoted companies, large unquoted companies and large LLPs. Other companies are only encouraged to report. The UK Sustainability Reporting Standards, issued on 25 February 2026, are for voluntary use, and the government and the FCA are still considering which entities might have to follow them. A government consultation on modernising corporate reporting opened on 7 September 2026 and closes on 30 November. It proposes rationalising thresholds and exemptions.
The pressure is more likely to come from customers. Suppliers bidding for major central government contracts must commit to Net Zero by 2050 and publish a Carbon Reduction Plan where it is relevant to the contract. Big suppliers already publish their numbers.
For a smaller organisation, the sensible move is to get the basics in place.. Scope 1 and 2 emissions are worked out from energy use, so a record of what you use, by system and by month, is where to start. Without one, any figure you give a customer rests on a monthly bill.
Before a customer asks for your numbers, book a consultation with Aireavu and find out what your own energy data would say.
